Chapter 14

“SANYCH, AT EASE!” a tough gray-haired man around fifty-five years of age nodded at his assistant, then at some chairs. “Take your seats.”

He didn’t try to intimidate us, which immediately endeared me to him. And overall, as we walked, I was looking side to side constantly and never saw anything of a criminal nature. No violence. There were a few lines of barricades around the portal, and right next to it were many people, who were clearly being systematically allowed to stand near it for a set amount of time. That meant there was no big pressure, and those in need got at least the minimum portion of life energy.

“My name is Pyotr Olegovich, Olegych for short. Show me your artifacts,” the man immediately got to business.

“We don’t have them on us.”

“I have to see something to make sure you aren’t trying to trick me.”

I took out three unopened unique boxes, showed them to him, and put them back.

“What do you want to trade them for?”

“Mana potions.”

“That it?”

“Characteristic books, magic points, and specialty crystals.”

Based on Olegych’s face, he at the very least had never heard about the second and third items before. He sat back in his chair and started tapping his pencil on the table.

“Would you please tell me what level you are?”

“Twenty-one.”

His brows shot up into his forehead and he stared deeply at us for the first time. I started to wonder what kind of impression we were making. I looked calmly at him, waiting to hear more. Vlad was sitting with his arms folded across his chest. Meanwhile, Kolyan was slumped in his chair with his legs crossed flagrantly cleaning his fingernails with a knife.

“I could use soldiers like you.”

“Just because we levelled fast doesn’t mean we’ll do what you say.”

“When it comes to going the distance, a constant pace is better than speed.”

“We plan to level quickly and constantly. Pyotr Olegovich, I imagine you are very busy, as are we. Do you have mana potions to trade? If not, we have to keep searching. I heard there’s another portal in Medvedkovo.”

“What are your names?”

“Yaroslav, Vladislav, Nikolai,” I said, pointing to my friends.

“Yaroslav. Want me to tell you what we’ve built here? I’m talking about levelling peaceful civilians.”

“Sure, we’ve got five minutes to spare.”

I sat back in my chair and took some dried apple compote from my backpack. Tatyana made it, and it raised intellect by two for five minutes.

“We’re making lists. We have built a maze-like path through the entire zone affected by the portal’s radiation. It takes two hours for people to complete. It is free to use. If you want to spend longer, you have to pay. With food, jewelry, and system items including mana potions.”

“Nice little scheme,” Kolyan said with an approving nod, looking up for the first time.

“We think so, too. Right now, it is the fairest one we could think up.”

“You never mentioned the world the portal leads to. Is there something wrong with it?”

“Yes. And if you help us
